Interview with Kristina Cope

Products From New Zealand Ltd - Unique and interesting products and gifts for you and your loved ones. A successful ecommerce website, with customers all around the world. Following is the transcript from an interview with Kristina Cope, General Manager, and founding Director of Products From New Zealand Ltd, in May 2002.

Managing Director

Kristina Cope
Interviewer: Kristina, thank you for coming into the studio today.
Kristina Cope: Thank you, you are most welcome.

Interviewer: Can you give our listeners an overview of what Products From New Zealand offers its customers?
Kristina Cope: In a nutshell, we have it all! :-) [ Refer sidebar ]

Interviewer: So Kristina, you launched Products From New Zealand Ltd in mid 2001. What made you create an e-commerce website as the major thrust of your company?
Kristina Cope: I approached various artists about what I proposed to do, they were all enthusiastic and had incredible range(s) of unique and interesting items.

I started selling these items to friends and family, and giving them away as gifts for birthdays, weddings etc and people kept coming back to me saying "Where did you get such and such from", over, and over again... I realised that they have universal and international appeal (from feedback from many people all around the globe) and so created a website, that showcased these items in the best light, and went from there.

We offer

Great prices, total online security, swift delivery, complete privacy, superb quality (typically 100% handcrafted), thousands of products (jewelry, pacific / oceanic art, CDs, scenic books, crafts, exotic foods, clothes, gift certificates etc) and responsive customer service for any occasion, or the person with everything!

Interviewer: I notice that you only sell New Zealand made items?
Kristina Cope: I noticed that numerous shops sold a mix of New Zealand products that were in not in fact made in New Zealand, but made in China. Although I have absolutely nothing against Chinese made products, I do not like the deception that people can pass off items, under a brand name or such tactic, that has been mass produced under licence in China. That is Chinese made. If I wanted to sell Chinese made I would have a shop called Made in China.

Anyway, the other major reason is that we are typically a very proud and small nation and I want to 100% support it and its people. I have deliberately approached manufacturers that take great care at making the items they produce. Over 90% of all the items are handmade, often signed by the artist on the back of them. They are limited edition, and in fact, many of our products are simply not available from retailers or wholesalers in the USA or Europe at all. You could spend thousands of dollars on a journey deep into the remote rainforests of New Zealand - or - with a few clicks of the mouse button, an authentic bone or wood carving, crafted by tribal Maori carvers, for example, could be shipped directly to your doorstep anywhere on the planet.

Not only are most of our products unusual and rare but they are also very affordable.

Interviewer: What are some of the categories of items you are selling?
Kristina Cope: From Books, Cards and Posters, Childrens Stuff, Classics, Clothes, Contemporary Art, Cosmetics, Funky Design, Gift Certificates, Jewelry, Organic Food, Out and About, Silk, Tapestry & Knitting, Wooden Items, to, you name it!

Interviewer: I did not realise how many items you stock? How many in fact?
Kristina Cope: At my last count I had over 2000 items that I would deem as 100% unique to New Zealand - i.e. only available from New Zealand. I plan to have over 30,000+ high quality, unique and interesting items on display and available for immediate sale by the middle of 2003. If I look at all the suppliers on my books, and I only select the top products from each one, I expect to have in total around 40-50,000 items available on the site when complete.

Interviewer: I see for example, that you have an extensive range of wooden products, from Kauri clocks to picture frames to wine racks to nautical themes. Are these popular?
Kristina Cope: Very much so, People love the natural glow that the Kauri wood has, or the reddy brown colors in the Rimu wood. We limit the number of one product sold to one customer, to make sure we are not depleting New Zealand's resources, and ensuring that other customers can purchase them if they want. This is due to the fact that some are made in limited numbers per year, due to the wood being either dug out of swamps or is plantation wood. We are very conservation minded.

" I bought a pair of black sandals, size 5, and loved them so much...that I decided to take them with me on my travels. We've been to Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and the North and South Island of New Zealand ... Awesome !!! They don't even look like sandals anymore :-( I'm in love with the roman sandals, living back in Holland, and I would like to order three pairs: 1 in red, 1 in black, and 1 in blue. Thank you! " Petra - Holland

Interviewer: I notice that you have some stunning paua (abalone) shell jewellery for sale. I see that a lot of celebrities in Hollywood are now wearing paua based jewelry?
Kristina Cope: Yes, ever since 'Xena Warrior Princess' as played by Lucy Lawless - a New Zealand TV program became a worldwide hit, and then followed by Peter Jackson's version of 'The Lord of the Rings' movie took the world by storm in early 2002, many actors are wearing paua based jewelry at high profile media functions.
Recently at the 2002 Academy Awards evening the wife of one of the Movie Directors wore two pieces of sterling silver jewelry that we represent. Kowhaiwhai Cuff Bracelet and the Koru Siver Pendant
We are pleased to be able to offer these same products - straight from the source at awesome prices!

Interviewer: What if someone cannot make up their mind with what they want to purchase?
Kristina Cope: We have a wish list feature on the site where people can make up their own list of items they really love, slowly work their way through the list as they so desire (I think a number of our regular customers would love this feature, as I am sure they have a list at home that they are ticking off :-) They can also email it to friends and family pre-Christmas, wedding, birthdays etc for gift ideas, etc We also have a popular gift certificate section. People can purchase a certificate on behalf of another person, (if they desire), it will be instantly emailed to them, and they can use it up all at once, or over a number of different visits to our store.

Interviewer: You sell womens and mens clothes. How do people get the right size?
Kristina Cope: We have put a lot of effort into this. Obviously it is of no advantage to anyone if they have to return items to get the right size. We have talked to, and observed how all the large and successful mailorder clothing companies do it, and we have based our sizing charts etc on this experience.

When you come to an item of clothing on the site, we have an icon that you click on. This brings up a comprehensive sizing chart for people to match their own countries sizing system against ours, and they can also compare this against their own physical size. If they are purchasing shoes, then, they can in addition to above, draw an outline of their feet and either fax it, or post it to us to 100% match shoes to feet!

Unique and interesting special gifts Interviewer: Do you provide online help?
Kristina Cope: On the LHS of every screen (on the website) is a link called 'How to?' in the Reassurance section. Clicking on this brings up a new window which gives lots of tips and advice to make your shopping experience easier.
I have put in things like adjusting the size of the font on your monitor, to resizing the monitor through to a step-by-step process on how to order something from us. It is easy to forget that many people have never purchased anything over the internet, so we have tried to make it as easy and straight forward as purchasing something from a 'bricks and mortar' shop at your local mall.
We will even gift wrap the item for you, and send it to you, or to a different delivery address like your friend who lives in a different country or city from you for their birthday :-)

Unique and interesting special gifts Interviewer:How can someone purchase from your site by the way?
Kristina Cope: People can either pay by credit card (by far the most popular and instant method) through our 100% secure merchant partners; WorldPay and PayPal. They can also transfer money from their PayPal account to ours seamlessly, or pay by personal or bank check (cheque).

Interviewer: Do you give anything away for free?
Kristina Cope: Definitely! We sure do. There are no hidden catches, or hooks! In addition to what we offer at our Free Goodies section, we also have a couple of other mystery gifts that pleasantly surprise our customers and makes them realise that we bend over backwards to really give first class service...If I told you what they were then they would not be a mystery...we also change the mystery gifts so that our regular customers never get the same mystery gift twice.

Interviewer: What reassurances do you give to customers that you will keep their personal details private?
Kristina Cope: Like most people that have an email address, I am totally bombarded with SPAM and other *disgusting* emails on a daily basis. From day one, I knew that I could not contribute to this by selling/leasing my customers private details to any 3rd party. Therefore, we have an extremely strict privacy policy that all staff must sign and adhere to before working for my company.
We use WorldPay and PayPal to handle all credit card transactions, to ensure the highest security for customers.

Interviewer: What happens after someone orders something from your site?
Kristina Cope: First off, as soon as someone orders an item from us, the system automatically sends them an email instantly from us (within minutes) that lists everything they have ordered, how much it will cost, where it is going to be shipped to, along with all of our contact details.
Also on this email, is a link (available via the internet 24x7) that allows them to see the progress of that order in our system.

Once payment has been received (say in the case of them sending us a check via postal system (snailmail)), when received, the system will automatically send out another email telling it has been received, funds have been cleared and order is about to be shipped.

As soon as we have selected the item(s) from our warehouse, picked and carefully hand packed them, the system automatically updates the status of the order online. It then automatically sends out another email telling the customer this, and that the order has been dispatched.
If they have purchased for example a piece of art, then the International Couriers TracknTrace / Airwaybill number is displayed for the customer to follow if desired on the customer status page.

Thus reassuring the customer 100% of the way with progress over the 2-10 days it takes for the item(s) to get to them.

The system will automatically email them within 20 days of shipping the item(s) to make sure they have received the items, and that they are 100% satisfied with the high quality of the item, and that it is infact what they thought they ordered.
Then in 340 days of delivering the item, the system will then email them again, reminding them that the warranty will expire in 10 days time, and make sure that are entirely happy with the product, and if they are having any problems, they need to address them immediately.
I am pleased to say, that we have not had to replace or refund anybody, for any reason. We see this as a testiment to the extremely high quality that our suppliers manufacture to, and the rigously high standards I maintain with them, through to the large, clear pictures, and full descriptions about the items on our site.

Unique and interesting special gifts Interviewer: How do you keep in contact with your customers?
Kristina Cope:The most regular is via our e-zine called The Chocolate Fish Ezine.
Interviewer:Chocolate Fish? - What is that ?
Kristina Cope: It is a classic Kiwi icon - a chocolate marshmellow in the shape of a fish
Interviewer: That gives me the imagery of food!
Kristina Cope: Yes it does, it also describes to me that this product range has substance, and worth getting into, to have a look at them etc. However, if you want food in particular, try this recipe: Banana and Coconut Pancakes with Mango Chutney.

If you sign up to our Newsletter, I will send you a New Zealand recipe every month to make your mouth water, and well within the average person's ability to cook at home :-)

This e-zine comes out about once a month, and we have (in addition to the recipe of something interesting to eat), deep discount deals for subscribers only, to competitions, to tit bits about shopping safely online, where to get such and such from, what's hot - what's not etc.

Interviewer: How can people contact you?
Kristina Cope: Via email or
they can phone us direct in New Zealand on: +64 21 641530 or USA Toll Free on +1 866 485 1375 or
they can leave a message on our USA based phone number: +1 240 363 5554 or
phone us directly on our UK based phone number: +44 7092 309 835 (this will divert toll free to our customer service center here in New Zealand, or you can leave a message.
Or they can fax us directly here in New Zealand on: +64 21 785241 or
they can fax us from our USA based fax number: +1 240 363 5554
or they can fax us from our UK based fax number: +44 7092 309 835
or they can post to: PO Box 128259, Remuera, Auckland 1005, NEW ZEALAND

Interviewer: I see you offer a 365 day warranty. That is a long time in a world where 'here today, gone tomorrow' is normal?
Kristina Cope: I looked at this closely, many of the items could in fact have a lifetime warranty on them.
I thought however, that some people would abuse this, so 365 days is a fair time for people to become really happy with the item.
We email the person 340 days before the warranty runs out, and remind them that they have 10 days left if they want to make a claim. Many of them come back to us with statements like: "You guys at Products From New Zealand are amazing (crazy :-) - you even draw attention to the fact that the warranty is about to run out. No problems here, I look forward to ordering more from you soon." or "Customer service is number 1. We are really pleased with the xyz we purchased from you." etc

Interviewer: Have you had anyone return an item yet?
Kristina Cope: No, and I guess one day we will. That is the nature of people and what happens in a retail environment for such and such a reason. We have all the procedures in place to make this a simple, painless and quick process for a person to return the item, and either get a refund, or a credit against their next item. Their choice, 100%.

Interviewer: Do you have any sort of Loyalty Program? Or, how do you reward your customers for purchasing from you?
Kristina Cope: We do a number of great things!
First off, if the person sends us an email asking for a free gift, we will send them a mystery gift worth US$20- with any order. This is all detailed in our Free Goodies section on the website. People are staggered with the value and beauty of this gift. We make no money on this, it is purely for goodwill, and our commitment to our customers :-)
We also send them a number of other mystery little presents to really show that we are totally the number One gift shop to purchase from. We also have a loyalty program where they spend x amount we will give them a free gift voucher etc.

Interviewer: Do you have any problems being New Zealand based (Southern Hemisphere) rather than Northern American based with credibility with potential customers?
Kristina Cope: No, not that I am aware of. We go out of our way to reassure customers that we are independently audited by 3rd party, non-profit organisations, like for instance: EpublicEye
We are also members of the international version of the Chamber of Commerce: WebChamber to provide an international perspective, to keep up to date with North American policy changes, and to ensure we are focused on the customer!

Having our site as a '.com' also helps, and we feel that we have a real affinity to the American people, (in particular) from the influence here in NZ with American culture through to us visiting America and Europe regularly. We have an excellent network of friends and family scattered throughout the Northern Hemisphere.
We expect to have a USA based office in the near future and are actively looking for distributors throughout USA, Canada and Europe. We are also setting up an affiliate program to reward websites that link to us, or sell our products on our behalf.

"Hi, I received my order from Products from New Zealand and would like to thank you for the book and lovely goodies. The book I purchased "Driving Scenic New Zealand" will be very helpful in my preparation for my visit to New Zealand next year.
It was wonderful to see you take such an active role in protecting the environment by recycling. Your handwritten thank you note is a very special and personal touch to your service.
I found your service to be very efficient, professional, but most of all, very personal - which is a breath of fresh air nowadays. I am really looking forward to my visit to New Zealand and I will continue to look for good quality "Products from New Zealand".
My best regards to you for the future.
Regards,

"Orla Q. Dublin, Republic of Ireland
We also have very strict Security, Shipping, & Privacy policies, that are published online, and also part of our employees terms of employment and are therefore adhered to by all staff in our organisation. This ensures consistancy with dealing with us, and credibility. Our customers testaments are our credibility at the end of the day.

Interviewer: What about social responsibilities?
Kristina Cope: We have strong views on social responsibilies, that inturn shape company policy and come through in the products and services that we offer to our customers.
We belong to 'Business for Social Responsibility (BSR)' which is a global nonprofit organization that helps companies achieve commercial success in ways that respect ethical values, people, communities and the environment. BSR provides both member and non-member companies with advisory services, information resources and cross-sector opportunities to network, collaborate and solve challenging business issues.

Interviewer: What is your thoughts on environmental issues? Do you have policies on looking after the environment, using renewable resources, minimising packaging wastage etc.?
Kristina Cope: We try to make a big stand for environmental issues. My background is in Environmental Architecture. I ran an Architectural practise called EarthBuilding South Pacific for many years, and my business partner and I focused on using renewable resources wherever possible - from earth bricks (i.e. New Mexico type earth based housing), to woollen batts to insulate the walls, to bio-paints, to non-treatable wood etc.
My husband was the first person in the suburbs of New Zealand to run a modern house on 100% renewable energy: using solar electricity. Click here to learn more about our office.
Unique and interesting special gifts
My husband worked closely with Greenpeace on a unique project in 1998 - to make our home, and a separate system for Greenpeace's New Zealand office, as the first grid-intertied systems in New Zealand.
This meant that during the day, the utility power meter spins backwards, giving us a credit on our power bill, and then at night we draw off the electricity from the grid for our use. We also have a power system that provides 100% of the power for the Products From New Zealand premises. This is world leading technology for distributed power systems.

We also belong to, and contribute actively to, as members of The NZ Environmental Business Network. The goal of the NZEBN, is to assist businesses on the journey to environmental improvement.

From this, all packaging for shipping products to customers around the world are typically recycled. From the cardboard boxes, to the bubble wrap, to even edible(!) filler to protect the items etc.

We encourge our suppliers to do the same, and also encourage the customer when they receive the parcel from us to recycle again.

Interviewer: I see you sell cosmetics. Why would anyone want to buy cosmetics from New Zealand?
Kristina Cope: You would be probably surprised to realize how many internationally recognised cosmetic brands (Elizabeth Arden etc) that have research and development and full manufacturing plants here in New Zealand, developing and exporting products throughout the western world.

However, the range we sell are very niche and unique. One manufacturer's range is all based around Manuka honey. New Zealand Manuka honey has healing properties unsurpassed by other honeys and often more effective than conventional medicines. Our customers *rave* about them.

The other large range is called Pacifica Skincare. This huge range have been designed by a fellow women business associate, and they are a big hit!. Designed by a woman for woman! She has also got a really great range for men that is proving to be also very popular.
One of the reasons for the popularly (apart from the fact that they work, are cost effective, and a product(s) for every one {gardeners, chiefs, mum, dad, or business man or woman etc}), is the awesome packaging that comes with them. For the same price as you would get just the cosmetic in a normal shop, these come with lots of extras.

I could talk about this range of products alone for this entire interview! I really recommend that customers have a look themselves.

Interviewer: What is your policy (or your manufacturers policy) on 'testing on animals' in regard to cosmetics?
Kristina Cope: It is pretty straight forward. If you want Products From New Zealand to wholesale and distribute your range of cosmetics, then this is the criteria
  • 1. Absolute no testing on animals.
  • 2. No use of mineral oil, petroleum, diazolidinyl urea, or artificial colours. i.e.. The ingredients they leave out of their products is as important as the ingredients they put in.
  • 3. Only the best ingredients they can source, using top quality plant oils, essential oils, and the highest grade fragrances etc.
We promise to only sell top quality natural products that are kind to your body and the environment and are available to you at an affordable price.
That simple!

Interviewer: The world is slowly waking up to organically grown produce. Has New Zealand embraced this? You give the impression that New Zealand is the land of Clean and Green Products.
Kristina Cope: We have a rapidly growing and very popular section on our site called Organic Food. This has a range of produce from chilli pickles, to jams, fruit drinks, to soda / mineral waters, to chutney to die for!

Interviewer: What do you see yourself doing five years from now?
Kristina Cope: Arhh, an easy question: running Products From New Zealand like I am today.
This is my passion, to genuinely help others find unique and interesting items to give to friends or loved ones for that special occasion. In fact I kept saying it to others, that I have used that statement as part of my corporate motto:
'Unique and interesting special gifts, collectibles, and furnishings, with which to spoil yourself or loved ones.'
Why do you ask?

Interviewer: So you are not looking for a quick buck, IPO (Initial Public Offering on the stock exchange) your company, and then sit back on the beach in Hawaii squandering your internet dollars?
Kristina Cope: Hahaha, people still do that I guess... No, I am here for the long-term. It gives me more pleasure looking after my customers, searching out such and such an item for them etc.
This is a pinnacle in my career, not a get rich scheme like many of the sites that are sadly on the internet these days. I genuinely care about my customers :-)

Interviewer: What do you mean by searching out items for customers?
Kristina Cope: We offer a service where if you cannot find something on our website, or you have a certain person that is *impossible* to buy for, we will go totally out of our way to see if we can match an item made here in New Zealand with what they are looking for, or to see if I can really impress the *hard to buy for person* with something really unique and interesting.

To give you an idea, one of our customers loves to travel around the world. When they travel, they like to take 'gifts' to give to the people they are staying with. They try to find something that they know the people they will be staying with will be interested in. We have really taken this on board; they give us background / interests of the people, and then we hunt down items that are related to those hobbies and interests.
For example, the last thing we sourced was fly-fishing related items. We then found the following for them: a Craig Potton book, and fly fishing display case.
Another customer got a passion for Roman sandals when she visited New Zealand many years ago. We found the main manufacturer of these in NZ, and now we sell these on our site.

Interviewer: What did you think of the 'dot bomb' shake out in 2001. Could you see it coming - you launched your website right at the tail end of it!
Kristina Cope: It was long overdue. Yes, it had to come, it was getting ridiculous that way people were floating companies that hadn't even sold anything - all based on concepts and false hopes.
It did not put me off from launching my ecommerce website as I knew that I was building and launching a site built on a solid foundation.
I knew that customers would come and search us out, and purchase when they saw what I had to offer: quality merchandise at excellent prices!

Interviewer: What motivates you to put forth your greatest effort?
Kristina Cope: That's an easy question! My customers of course. I derive a huge amount of pleasure from satifying my customers with the requests they make, getting the order to them on time and getting the wonderful feedback from them when they receive the goods.

Interviewer: What are your strengths?
Kristina Cope: I believe I have a good feel for art, form and factor, ie when I look at an item a person has made, I can see if it has outstanding appeal for an international audience / customer base or not. I discard many suppliers products that don't meet my customers and I high standards.
I have a good eye for detail and quality made products. I am fair, honest, straight forward, and have high standards that I set for myself, and expect others who work for me to adhere to. I love making people happy :-)

Interviewer: How do you spend your spare time? What are your hobbies?
Kristina Cope: I have two wonderful children, and a husband who supports and encourages me with my career.
We spend as much time as possible with the children and each other - so currently our hobbies are related to swimming, walking, reading a good novel when I get a chance (laughter) to going on simple day and overnight trips out and about around Auckland.

Interviewer: Can you tell us a little about the premises that your company operates from? I gather they are not in what you would call 'standard commercial buildings'?
Kristina Cope: The premises of "Products From New Zealand", embrace our commitment to energy conservation and renewal.
  • 100% of the electricity needs is generated using solar electric modules (photovoltaics) on the roof.
  • A separate solar hot water system gives piping hot water 365 days of the year. The rain water is collected from the roof, stored, and then used to flush toilets, wash dishes with etc.
  • The construction of the building is made using plantation pine (wood), and wool is used to make insulation batts that are installed in the walls, ceiling and under the floor, to keep the office warm and snug in winter, and cool in summer.
  • The office is orientated due North (same as due South in the Northern Hemisphere) to maximise solar gain in winter and shading is provided in the summer months by deciduous trees and vines.
  • The warehouse has solar heated water piped through the floor to make it very pleasant underfoot in winter, in addition to the natural solar gain from the way the building is oriented towards the sun.
  • The offices is located right outside the railway station for the area, along with bus stop around the corner. This encourages our staff to take public transport to work each day whenever possible.
  • On a more IT related matters, we have a client server network, running the latest OS, with high speed internet access, firewalls, etc. Data is automatically backed up every day, and all staff must adhere to strict policies to ensure privacy of customers information (email address, date-of-birth etc) on a day to day interaction with customers.
This is no back-country set up. We are based right within New Zealand's largest city - Auckland, close to the international airport, courier pick up depot etc.
Our warehouse and office are fully equipped to handle your enquires, and ship to you in a timely manner.

Interviewer: We have a couple of minutes left of the interview. Can you tell us a little about your background?
Kristina Cope: I grew up with strong family moral and ethical values, combined with leadership roles from both my mother and father.

My entrepreneurial mother entered the apparel trade creating her own range of knitwear under her label (Kay Austin), in addition to importing American cotton to supply customers throughout New Zealand.

This strong background in wholesale marketing has provided some of the incentive for my entry into the Internet market.

My father - an architect and entrepreneur, found a rapidly growing need in the building industry for a balance of quality of design mixed with commercial responsibility. His role in helping to found and build New Zealand's largest architectural firm inspired me to also to appreciate design, form and function. I also qualified as an architect and specialised in Eco-design and rammed earth construction.

Forming an architectural practice - Earthbuilding South Pacific (ESP), in 1994, which specialised in earth-made houses (adobe / rammed earth most often associated with New Mexico - USA), I came into contact with many manufacturers of innovative, unique, products and gifts.

The owners of these companies wanted houses designed for them that reflected their desire to be in harmony with nature. It is some of these companies that are now the suppliers of products) to my company. From there, we grew and grew!

Meeting Simon, my husband, in 1995, then providing specialist-consulting services in the solar electric energy (renewable energy generation) field, the 'sun' met the 'earth', and an inseparable bond was made.

"Products From New Zealand" is an expression of this bond. The target is to sell locally made gifts and products that are typically unique to New Zealand's culture, yet offer world-wide appeal.

Interviewer: You wished to say something about your suppliers and customers, I believe?
Kristina Cope: Before, the interview ends, I must say two things.
I have to first of all thank the manufacturers and suppliers to our company, as without them, we would be nothing! They have shown real commitment to my vision and dream, and have made it a reality to be able to offer world class products to customers throughout the world that are unique, interesting, and sometimes topical.
We encourage innovation and unique ideas to produce gifts for customers throughout the world to enjoy in their house, or to share with loved friends and family.

Of course, I then must really thank my customers, for them to recommend their friends to visit our shop is the highest compliment of all. We have a very loyal base of customers, who are throughout the world (USA, Canada, UK, Denmark, Holland, Japan, France and Italy) and we thank them very much for the ongoing success of the organisation. Because, without them, this cannot happen.

Interviewer: Thank you Kristina for your time this morning. I wish you well in the future with your business.
Kristina Cope: Thank you for this opportunity.

Interviewer: Kristina, off air, then gave us a little background on the country she obviously loves and cherishes: New Zealand.
Kristina Cope: New Zealand as a nation is strongly committed to staying:
  • 100% clean and green (still) from an environmental point of view.
  • Is used to being isolated from the rest of the world (before the Internet anyway!), and has learned to invent and make products, rather than just import from 'overseas'.
  • Is very proud of its small country, the immense beauty and variety it offers with rich & fertile land, high sunshine hours, and a diverse culture.
  • Believes strongly in "Invention, Innovation and Ingenuity - the Kiwi way". (Also integrity I must add).
  • 73% of the country's electricity is generated using a renewable energy source - hydro (water), and the uptake of using solar electricity and other renewables is becoming evident.
  • Totally believe in a "give it a go!" philosophy. This means that many Kiwis (New Zealand's National bird - also adopted as the name for "our people") still are involved with building and maintaining their own homes and mixing the weekends with a hobby or an active engagement in sport and family.
